Welcome to Department of English


The Department of English situated in the heart of the former Govt. College for Women was founded on 1st September 1947. Since independence, the department has been blessed with the unmatchable stature of being the beacon of knowledge guided by the highly competent and skilled staff. At the outset, the education was limited at the intermediate level. In 1953 and 1962, F.Sc and B.Sc classes were commenced respectively. In 1986, Masters in English was introduced. Being cognizant of the requirements of international standards, the BS program was launched in 2010. With the approval of the Act of Women University Multan by the Punjab Assembly in 2010, the college coalesced in the Women University Multan in 2012. In 2013, MPhil and Ph.D. started and embarked on the journey of ascendance. The programs have been designed to instill creative thinking, analytical and cogitative abilities in the students. Furthermore, the designed syllabus offers the students to ideally complete the cycle of course work, qualify examinations and other course-related prerequisites within the stipulated timeframe.

Vision

To provide industrious training for productive and innovative research, publication in international forums, and teaching at the college/university level. The department presents the opportunity to the students to:

  • Learn in a nurturing and developing environment which can help them in their productive growth of learning.
  • Develop solid foundations in Literature and Linguistics to hone their critical thinking.
  • Develop research skills through analysis and the application of theories to issues in Linguistics/Literature specifically relevant to Pakistan.
  • Sharpen their command on specific topics but also theoretical issues.
  • Enhance communication skills and technical reading.
  • Strengthen writing skills seek to fulfill their socio-cultural and economic demands.
  • Apply interdisciplinary approach to knowledge opted by the faculty can be witnessed in their alliance with programs such as Women's Studies, Gender Studies, Socio-Cultural and Cross-Cultural Studies.

Mission

The Department of English ventures on the assiduous grounding in the various areas of English Literature and Linguistics, boosting up the students' literary and linguistic sensibilities, thus, empowering them to comprehend, appreciate and evaluate language in general and literary texts in particular, using the latest learning/teaching methodology. It is hoped that the students graduating with the degrees will be able to implement the knowledge that they have acquired during the course of these programs notwithstanding the way their professional and personal lives might take.

Students Learning Objectives (SLOs)

  • To develop knowledge and understanding of English Literature and Linguistics which as a result will hone the critical thinking and research skills of the students.
  • To enable students to write and speak clearly, read perceptively, and think critically, and understand how written and spoken language expresses diverse cultural experiences.
  • To empower students to develop creative thinking, analytical and cogitative abilities
  • To develop communication skills and technical reading and writing skills that will fulfill their socio-cultural and economic demands consequently.
  • To make students responsible, well-trained, creative, critical, and productive scholars; empathetic and intellectual critics, and effective and imaginative teachers and professionals.
  • To develop literary and linguistic sensibilities in students.
  • To prepare students for their professional careers so that they will be able to implement the knowledge that they have acquired during the course of the English program.

I feel great privilege in introducing the Department of English at WUM to all prospective students. Though commenced in 2013, is singularly one of the most prestigious in the region. In the shortest of time, we have achieved great academic repute with the numerous workshops, webinars, co-curricular activities on our panel. I say this with certainty that the English Department here promotes innovation in the disciplines of both, language and literature. Our institute promulgates research and exploratory studies. The courses offered here pertain to English Literature as well as Linguistics; B.S (Hons), Masters (M.A), Masters in Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Ph.D. We keenly look forward to expanding the horizons of pupils from the diasporic regions of South Punjab through a mixed method approach. Here at the Department of English, we value the institution policy towards research excellence. A high standard in academic field has always been our top priority. Yet our students are involved in a versatile set of activities as well. The faculty at this department is eager to work with students to hone their creative and communicative skills. This not only helps them academically but also comes handful in their practical life. We believe that students and the educationists, together as a team, can build a positive learning environment.
