Welcome to Department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology

Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology was established in 2017 in The Women University, Multan (WUM) with intentions to provide a stimulating and diverse teaching and research environment. Degree programs offered by the Department are BS Biochemistry (4-years), BS Biotechnology (4-years) and M.Phil Biochemistry and MPhil Biotechnology(2 years).and M.Phil. Biochemistry (2 years). The Department is projected to expand the knowledge and insight in science underpinning Biochemistry and Biotechnology principles by initiating PhD programmes also. In addition, it will help to apply knowledge and skills in addressing problems in the study of Animals, Plants, Microbes, Industrial, Environmental problems, Health sciences and Nanotechnology. The Department has highly qualified and competent faculty having Ph.D. and M.Phil. Degrees and research experience from reputable national and international universities.

Vision

To promote the development of conducive scholarly environment to enhance intellectual capabilities, to offer graduate and undergraduate programs that are of international standards and to foster research and scholarly activities in Biochemistry and Biotechnology.

Mission

Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology will make an effort to excel in undergraduate, graduate and post graduate education by creating a workable environment. Department will make professional relationships with other organizations for the improvement in teaching and research. Focus will be given to:

  • Research areas that will have a practical application in Industry, Environment, Medical and Agriculture.
  • To find the natural ways for the eradication of harmful compounds.
  • To establish and maintain the leadership in the pursuit and dissemination of knowledge by quality and relevant teaching, and research activities in the field of BBT to promote interdisciplinary research to find solutions to the challenges faced.

Students Learning Objectives (SLOs)

The program integrates the molecular life sciences from the most basic biology-chemistry interface to advanced molecular biology, molecular genetics, bioinformatics and genetic engineering. The program will provide necessary skills and knowledge in applying biochemical and molecular approaches for the solution of problems related to Health, Agriculture, Industry and Environmental Biotechnology. The desired outcomes are to:

  • Ensure that the students will also have a knowledge and skill as a scientist by providing strong and holistic biosciences training which will be very much relevant to meet the demands of present day.
  • Application of scientific and engineering principles to the processing of materials by biological agents to produce goods and services.
  • Work towards the goal of completion of human genome and Arabidopsis genome projects in the year 2000 were great breakthroughs in the field of biotechnology.
  • Revolutionary impacts on every aspect of human activity such as agriculture, forestry, horticulture, livestock, health, medicine and environment.
  • In agriculture focus, it is estimated that the next green revolution or more appropriately “evergreen revolution or more revolution “evergreen revolution” will be due to biotechnological innovations.
  • Research in livestock, production of new transgenic animals will not only meet the future needs of protein, dairy products etc but these animals could also be used as bioreactor for the production for various pharmaceuticals products.
  • Develop new safe protein drugs, particularly by site-directed mutagenesis, vaccines, diagnostic kits, antibiotics and enzymes can be produced by exploiting the biotechnology in the field of medicine (Medical biotechnology).
  • Work in the genetic based diagnostic assays for some genetic disorders and other diseases have already been developed and their treatment by gene therapy would be possible.

The graduates will be trained in such a way that they will be equipped with problem solving and critical thinking skills. They will also be equipped with good communication and interpersonal skills after leaving this Department. The primary objective of the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology is to produce manpower that can contribute to the development of Pakistan particularly in science and technology and its economy in general.
